I am so glad to be back in the Club! I’ve been a member for a long time; the Club is my Happy Place. It is the place I go where I’m guaranteed to feel better than before I went.
I have felt safe since first going back when it re-opened. The COVID prevention practices directed by staff are followed by members – everyone is wearing a mask and are armed with a disinfectant bottle and wipe provided at the welcome desk upon entering.
Although it felt strange in the beginning, it is now feeling more normal. Some classes are back (Katie’s Yoga on Thursday (6 pm) and Saturday (10 am). Allison’s Body Pump is back too.) I’m seeing old friends and acquaintances.
I spoke to a member who just recently came back. He had been concerned about crowds and was relieved to see while there are some member present, it is far from crowded. In my experience, there have typically been fewer than 15 members in the fitness center.
The big thing for me is the mental health benefit that comes from being at the Club. I feel much better than those first awful months of COVID lockdown and am thrilled to be back at my Happy Place! We, as a society, still have far to go before this virus is under control. But the Club is doing it’s part responsibly and providing a needed respite from the madness.
Denise Rowe is the best yoga teacher I have ever had. Her knowledge and explanations of the anatomy behind simple yoga poses is amazing. The most important thing she taught me is the awareness of my own body – what I need to feel while doing a particular position. I found this very helpful because I can self-correct while doing yoga on my own. This way I can be sure that I am doing the poses correctly in order to get the benefit of yoga and not get an injury.
She is such a generous person giving her extra time and knowledge and even her own equipment to get the best practice possible. Denise is able to adjust her program depending on the level of the class participants and offers a lot of props and modifications of the poses so everybody can participate and not feel left out.
“I’ve been back to the AHC fitness center several times since it reopened and want to say how impressed I am with the cleanliness of the facility and the safety procedures that are in place. Everyone must wear a mask and social distancing signs are everywhere. When members arrive they are handed a spray bottle and rag and must spray and dry any equipment or surfaces they touch, both before and after use. Equipment has been moved and/or reconfigured for distance and safety. Staff are always around to monitor the area to make sure guidelines are being followed. They are definitely staying on top of the safety, health and wellness of members! I would definitely recommend coming back to the club for others.
I’m especially happy to start training again with John Kecman to try and regain strength lost during the shutdown. If you’re looking for a trainer or even some motivation to get back into a routine, I highly recommend John.”
“Considering the current situation, the club has been operating in a very safe and professional manner, while maintaining an excellent level of hospitality.”
“It’s a wonderful experience to be back at the gym. I feel completely confident that all measures are taken to secure the members’ safety. Safety is a priority. Masks are required at all times and staff and members practice social distancing.
Staff provides members with towels and sanitizer to clean the equipment before and after use. The staff makes sure that members follow all guidelines to ensure our safety. Equipment is clearly marked so members know what is available for use.
John Kecman, the Personal Training Director, is extremely helpful with keeping all the equipment clean and safe. John is an experienced trainer and listens to your needs and concerns – I absolutely recommend him.”
I had my first visit back to the club last week, and it is so great to be back. It’s been a second home for me for almost three decades, and I realized how much I have missed the Aspen Hill family. The team sincerely seemed happy to see me, and I truly felt welcome. The environment is extremely safe. I won’t even eat at any outdoor restaurant, and, in general, I am much more careful than most people. I had no concern at all for catching Covid-19 at the Club. Everything is super clean, and I had no trouble wearing my mask as I did fairly hard cardio.
Honestly, I’ve been working out a lot here at home over the pandemic, an average of 2-3 hours per day. I’ve even been making YOUTUBE SPIN classes from home on a weekly basis for members. It still hasn’t been the same these 5 months without the club as the foundation for my workouts and friendships. I highly recommend getting back into the club routine. It’s also nice for mental health to see friends and work-out in the club environment after this crazy 2020.
I have been a member at the Aspen Hill Club for over 35 years. When the club announced it was reopening the fitness center, I was concerned about how safe it would be. As many other members, contracting Coronavirus was a concern, especially since I am over 70 years old with some underlying health issues. However, based on the protocol identified in the reopening email, I decided to give the club a chance.
I made my reservation for the opening afternoon session and pleasantly surprised how safe I felt when I arrived. Instructions for wearing a mask on the entire campus are displayed from the parking lot and throughout the club. Plexiglass shields the front desk personnel and every member is given a bottle of their own sanitizing spray and cleaning rag upon entrance. The entrance and exit to and from the fitness center are clearly labeled. The fitness center was immaculate as club has done a great job cleaning every part of it. The equipment is strategically located to encourage physical distancing and fitness staff is very courteous to remind members to adhere to physical distancing and to wear their masks. I did my workout, felt very safe and look forward to being at the club daily as we persevere through the pandemic. My message to you is come on down to the club, I look forward to seeing you there.
Three years ago, Lee entered his then 10 year old, Lola, in a tennis tournament at Aspen Hill Club. After seeing the Club, Lee said to himself, “WHAT? This is here?” and the rest is history. All three kids have found a place at the Club, all while Fannie and Lee stay very active with a variety of tennis and fitness activities.
Fannie has found “me time” by taking advantage of a wide array of the Club’s offerings. “I’m in Zumba, spinning, the pool, and I love my personal training sessions with Kevin!” Fannie explained. Fannie enjoys seeing her kids happy at the Club, in fact, “This is second home to our family. Anthony gets grumpy if he misses a day of working out!”
With Fannie being so active, you might think that Lee would have trouble keeping up with her—not the case! Lee takes advantage of the gym, weights, and basketball court. In fact, Lee and Fannie have joined Jeff Klein’s Saturday morning Adult Beginner Tennis class!
Anthony and Octavio can often be found trying to keep up with their dad in the gym. But, in addition, you will find them helping out their fellow members! Anthony assisted in teaching Champion’s Tennis Camp and Octavio now works at the Front Desk.
Since first finding the Club through a 10 and under USTA tournament three years ago, Lola has thrived on the court. She participated in our Futures program last Fall and High Performance Camp this past Summer. You also may have seen her taking part in USTA Mid Atlantic tournaments over the summer—it has delighted us that she has earned three championships at her home Club!
Fannie, Lee, Octavio, Anthony, and Lola—THANK YOU so much for adding to our community! Your positive attitude and commitment to staying active motivate so many kids and adults of all ages.

It’s like a country club without the golf, the expense and the attitudes!

February 23rd was a very special day for me. I competed at the USA Virginia Novice Open, my 3rd official powerlifting competition. My squat was 120lbs, bench: 77lbs and deadlift 155lbs. It is exactly two years ago that I began my journey to better health and fitness. I’ve now lost close to 80lbs. Two years ago my wonderful big sis, Linda Zall Zeichner encouraged me to go to the Duke Diet and Fitness Center. The month that I spent there gave me the basic tools on how to live a healthier life. At The Aspen Hill Club, I randomly chose a trainer, John Kecman and it turned out to be the best choice I could have ever made. John has helped me to change my life in ways that I never could have imagined. In two years I’ve gone from being out of breath going up a flight of steps to being a competitive powerlifter. I no longer care about how small my body is but how strong it is. At age 62, for the first time in my life I feel in control of my body rather than my body being incontrol of me. I’d like to thank my family, friends and especially Coach John Kecman for all their support in the past two years. I couldn’t have done it without you!
“Dana, I wanted to go public with my high satisfaction regarding the “deep tissue” physical therapy and athletic stretching services which Demitrus Willis has provided to me via Aspen Hill’s expanded services offering. Having played college D1 level athletics at its highest level I have been exposed to and had access to top level athletic and injury treatment support services. It is with this personal history that I say that Mr. Willis knowledge of injury origin and treatment abatement is on par with the high level of support I received while playing for a national champion program. That said, I do strongly recommend Mr. Willis’s services to any individual (male or female) that is currently being afflicted by sport induced pain or injury, and I am quite confident that all who use his services will experience rapid improvement in their sport and athletic injury rehabilitation. If you wish to discuss further do not hesitate to reach out to me.” – Kevin Costello
