Welcome New Trainer, Dmitry Tepper!

My fitness journey started only three years ago, I was unhealthy, unhappy and overweight. I was a member back then and some people still remember me being, looking and behaving as a totally different person. I had no energy to wake up in the morning and no drive to do anything. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood sugar. My lower back was killing me after a car accident that happened many years ago. I was buying shoes with no laces because I couldn’t bend down to tie them. The only answers I was getting from doctors was having a spinal fusion and taking statins and blood regulating pills that cause all kinds of problems and also are almost irreversible – once you get on them you have a little to no chance to get off of them. I didn’t like the alternative provided by doctors so I decided to take my destiny in my own hands. I decided to radically change my diet and start working out very seriously. At the beginning it was very hard to overcome the lack of energy and motivation. But the more I was doing this the better I felt and it gave me motivation to continue and with time, while increasing my training frequency. With proper guidance I quickly got to a different place. I actually felt so healthy and strong that I decided to start my powerlifting career. In only one year of doing so I was able to break four Maryland record sand one National record. I was able to solve so many of my own health problems so I started helping other people. At some point I realized that I like it so much so I decided to make it my second profession. I got certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer and joined my friends on the Aspen Hill Club Team.

Training Testimonial By: Beatrice Grabowski

I signed up for five sessions with Demitrus Willis and would like to say that he is an excellent and knowledgeable trainer. I was having problems with weakness in my hand and wanted to tweak my workout. He not only helped me regain strength in my hand, but also gave me pointers on posture and more effective ways of using the machines in my workout. Demitrus has an encyclopedic understanding of how the body works in real time and different postures. It was a pleasure working with him.

CTR: Cross Training TRX Reformer Testimonial!

By: Dinitri Dantley

It was six weeks before my son’s wedding. I was trying to decide what to wear as mother of the groom. One outfit was a sleeveless, one shoulder jumpsuit. The other was a long sleeved jacket and pants.  My arms were in pretty good shape but, not quite sleeveless worthy. The six week combined TRX and Pilates Reformer class conducted by Heather and Renee was right on time.

Weddings are happy occasions.  However, the details and deadlines can be stressful and involve several food centered activities. The classes provided workouts that were calorie burning, muscle toning and core strengthening.  Heather‘s TRX regimens took me to the brink of my abilities while providing modifications for my individual limitations. Renee’s Pilates routines complemented Heather’s by providing a joint friendly series that improved my core, breathing, overall muscle strength and balance. Additionally, those two women are infused with vibrancy and a breadth of fitness knowledge. Together they provided the perfect counter balance to any extra calories and stress that came my way.

At the end of the six weeks, my arms were sleeveless worthy.  However, I wore the long sleeved one because my daughter convinced me that it was just more, Bam! That word also describes the TRX/Pilates workouts because they improved my Body and Mind during a critical period.

You can always find the Tan family smiling at the Aspen Hill Club! This active family knows the importance of staying healthy and the Club has given everyone a way to be active in their own way.

Allen and Sunant grew up locally, both attending Kennedy High School and were members of the school varsity tennis team. Allen started tennis as a teenager after watching a some of his peers hitting the school tennis courts. He got a few friends together and they taught themselves how to play. Soon enough they were ready for the Kennedy High School Boys Tennis Team.

Now with two sons of their own, 9 year old Nathan and 11 year old Matthew, the couple knew they wanted to get the kids active in tennis. “A friend told me about the great program at Aspen Hill, so we came by. Tennis is great because they learn about exercise, competition, problem solving, and having a hobby for life! It’s much better than if they sat home and played video games!” explains Allen.

Nine year old Nathan is a member of Aspen Hill’s Junior Academy program, where he continues to work very hard on improving his tennis game, “Nathan is always one of the hardest workers in the class, and he makes everyone better,” explains Aspen Hill tennis professional Julien DeLaine. In fact, Nathan has been competing in USTA tournaments, winning his last two “10 and under” events. His last tournament was the USTA Orange Ball event at the Aspen Hill Club, congratulations, Nathan!

Matthew began his tennis in the Aspen Hill Club last winter in the Academy program. Through hard work in Academy and World Class Summer Camp, he is now a member of our highly competitive Future Stars program. Matthew was a key member of Aspen Hill’s Junior Interclub Team, tallying several key wins over strong opponents. In all of his matches, Matthew worked hard and never gave up! His great attitude on the court helped him earn several come-from-behind victories. Matthew is now competing in USTA sanctioned tournaments and his level continues to rise!

Sunant and Allen enjoy seeing the boys having fun on the tennis court from the comfortable couches of the Club, but they don’t just come to watch the action—they get involved too! “We enjoy the gym, it lets us get a great work out in while the boys are in tennis class,”
explains Allen.

Allen and Sunant, the smiles that your family shares with us at the Aspen Hill Club are contagious! We are so happy that you are part of our community and we are so looking forward to watching Matthew and Nathan grow on and off of the tennis court!

Seven years ago Victoria was searching for a home where she could focus on aquatics program. Our 25-meter indoor pool brought her to the Aspen Hill Club. Swimming is a big part of Victoria’s life—and she is also fully engaged on the tennis court! She and husband Marcos, and children Aiden, Dalton and Erin have used the pool, tennis court, and an array of other roles and responsibilities to grow & learn as a family at The Club, “We had a great place for our family to grow, learn, & play” says Victoria.

Victoria continues to be a big part of the aquatics scene at The Club. In addition to being a swim instructor, you can often find Victoria taking in a water aerobics class, working out in the gym, & a constant on our tennis courts!  Marcos makes great use of the gym—and uses our weight room to get into shape for his tennis. American Hero Classic 2018 THANK YOU!

Posted on

We did it again! The American Hero Classic powerlifting meet on November 10th was a huge success. Raising $1,050 for Paralyzed Veterans of America has never been more fun. For many of our participants it was their first experience training for and competing in a powerlifting meet. We provided powerlifting clinics and did one on one training for many of the participants to prepare them. In case you haven’t heard of powerlifting the basic premise is to Squat, Bench press and Deadlift as much weight as you can with in three attempts for each lift. Form is critical, so the participants not only trained to build strength but also did lots of work on technique and form. If you didn’t get a chance to experience the excitement mark your calendars for November 9th 2019! See you next year.

Here is a summary of what went down:

  • Participants lifted over 5 tons, 10,475 pounds
  • $525 donated to Paralyzed Veterans of America based on weight lifted
  • We raised an additional $525 through the generous donation of our members
  • We had more than 75 spectators attend throughout the event

Member Spotlight: Living the After Party! Werner-Schiffer Family

Werner-Schiffer FamilyRachel brought then five-year-old Ethan to The Club to celebrate his buddies birthday party. Upon visiting the Aspen Hill Club, she was in awe! Membership Director Eric Suchinsky, offered to give Rachel a tour. Up until her visit, the family had memberships to two health clubs—one to make sure that Rachel got her fitness classes and another to ensure that Jeremy had access to an indoor pool. What they were missing was the family atmosphere that had fun for their two little ones. With the fun that Ethan had at The Club for the party, Rachel knew that one Club had everything she was looking for! (more…)

The Best Exercise Ever

Posted on

By: Dana Shorb, Fitness Director

Everybody should deadlift. If you can walk unassisted than it would be a benefit for you to start deadlifting. I hear about excuses like general weakness, bad back and knee pain but I’m certain a majority of these issues didn’t arise from deadlifting. Chances those issues could have been prevented by deadlifting. I’m here to tell you that you can fix all of those issues with this one simple exercise. Even with these aches and pains, you can deadlift and with the proper modifications, precautions and preparations, you should. You see, the deadlift is not a lower back exercise! If you feel it in your lower back you are doing it wrong. The deadlift is not a knee dominant exercise. If you feel it in your knees you are doing it wrong. (more…)

“Dana, I wanted to go public with my high satisfaction regarding the “deep tissue” physical therapy and athletic stretching services which Demitrus Willis has provided to me via Aspen Hill’s expanded services offering. Having played college D1 level athletics at its highest level I have been exposed to and had access to top level athletic and injury treatment support services. It is with this personal history that I say that Mr. Willis knowledge of injury origin and treatment abatement is on par with the high level of support I received while playing for a national champion program. That said, I do strongly recommend Mr. Willis’s services to any individual (male or female) that is currently being afflicted by sport induced pain or injury, and I am quite confident that all who use his services will experience rapid improvement in their sport and athletic injury rehabilitation. If you wish to discuss further do not hesitate to reach out to me.” – Kevin Costello
